Touhou is a franchise of 'mainly' vertical shoot-em-ups (shmups), created by ZUN (Team Shanghai Alice).
Due to the special rules ZUN has set up, creators are allowed to monitize and create their own games involving touhou charachters.
This inadvertedly caused a massive growth in both popularity and projects involving the touhou project.
